SUMMARY:A Date With History: Bill Messner\, Ph.D. on Slavery to Freedom in Talbot County
DESCRIPTION:The Talbot Historical Society and Easton Club East invited members to “A Date With History” lecture series featuring Bill Messner\, Ph. D. in American History from the University of Wisconsin\, Madison. After teaching history as a faculty member\, Bill transitioned to administration and spent the last thirty years of his career as a college president at three different institutions. Bill has written a book and numerous articles dealing with the Civil War and Reconstruction period. His talk drew on a series of articles he authored recently for the Maryland Historical Magazine. This presentation focused on the unique nature of the emancipation process in Talbot County\, and the various ways in which African Americans responded to the promise and limits of freedom. Attention was given to contrasting the experiences of two African American Talbot County leaders\, Joe Gray of Easton and Nathan Hopkins of Trappe. Additionally\, the establishment of the hamlet of Unionville by African American Civil War veterans aided by a family of Quakers provides an example of the benefits of interracial cooperation in Talbot County during the postwar period and the manner in which social and economic forces combined to limit those achievements.

SUMMARY:A Date With History: Author James Foster
DESCRIPTION:A Date With History – Lecture Series \nFeaturing: James Foster \nSailing on the Chesapeake Bay’s myriad inlets in summer it is hard to imagine that\, come January\, icebreakers may be plowing the waters you cruised in July. When portions of the Great Shellfish Bay are iced up\, the flow of commerce is impeded. At the turn of the nineteenth century\, with the center of the new nations’ government established in its arms\, a frozen Bay meant that the United States’ emergence to a status on par with the foremost nations of the world would be painfully slow. James Foster chronicles the disasters and pitfalls\, large and small\, that come with the coldest of winters. \nJames Foster is a lifelong resident of the Chesapeake Bay region. He first became interested in icy winters on the Chesapeake Bay while working at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt\, Maryland\, in the 1970s. He had the opportunity to study satellite images of the Bay during the intensely cold winter of 1976-77 and has written several scientific articles that deal with ice and snow in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. This is his first book on the Chesapeake Bay. \n  \nAuthor\, James Foster\, will join us on Wednesday\, November 17\, 2021 at 1p.m. to speak about his newly released book\, Icy Winters on the Chesapeake Bay. \nSeating is limited. Reservations and masks are required.\nCost: Free for members\, $5 for non-members\nLocation: 25 S. Washington St.\, Easton\nPlease call 410-822-0773 or email kaylaw@talbothistory.org \n

SUMMARY:The Invention of Colonial Williamsburg Lecture
DESCRIPTION:“The Invention of Colonial Williamsburg.” \nColonial Williamsburg\, Virginia\, is the most studied 18th-Century town in the world.  This illustrated lecture will cover the founding and growth of this vast historical resource.  What drove the recovery of the town?  What changes have been made over the last 95 years? What sorts of insights can Williamsburg’s archaeology\, architecture\, material culture\, and history give us. This talk is about peering into the seeds of Time.  \nMichael Olmert wrote the Official Guide to Colonial Williamsburg (1985-2015) and has written some 50 articles for Colonial Williamsburg Magazine.  A professor in the University of Maryland’s English Department\, Olmert has long been interested in the connection between literature and history and architecture.  His books include Milton’s Teeth and Ovid’s Umbrella (Simon and Schuster\, 1996) and Kitchens\, Smokehouses\, and Privies (Cornell Univ. Press\, 2009).  His television writing has won him three primetime Emmys. \n

SUMMARY:Slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland: The Legacies of Frederick Douglass\, Harriet Tubman\, Richard S. Potter\, and Moses Viney
DESCRIPTION:From newspaper accounts to personal narratives to essays\, we’ll analyze the everyday lives of slaves on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the 19th century.  We’ll retrace the journey of slaves such as Frederick Douglass\, whose life began on the Wye Plantation of Talbot County\, and ended on his own estate of Cedar Hill in Washington\, D.C.  To imagine what life would have been like for him\, we’ll take a virtual tour of both estates.  We’ll also discuss lesser known slaves of Caroline and Talbot Counties\, such as Richard S. Potter and Moses Viney.  Please join us for what promises to be a memorable discussion! \nThis event will be held August 4th at 1:00 PM with guest speaker Linda F. Earls\, Associate Professor of English\, Chesapeake College. It will be in the Extended Museum Gallery in the front of the Hill Research Center. Tickets are free for members and $5 for non-members. This event is by reservation only\, and will be limited to 40 seats\, so please email erinp@talbothistory.org or call 410-822-0773 to reserve your seat. \n  \nAbout the speaker\nLinda Earls began teaching at Chesapeake College in 1995 as an adjunct faculty instructor to the English department\, but was hired as a full-time professor in 1997 (teaching reading\, composition and literature courses\, particularly American and African American literature). \nShe frequently co-teaches American literature with American history professors\, as she believes the two courses go “hand in glove.” A lover of history\, she has an extensive collection of Civil War letters\, and since childhood has been fascinated visiting and reading anything pertaining to the war. \nA native of the Eastern Shore\, Earls shares her passion for making history “come alive” with her students by traveling with them to locations such as Cedar Hill in Washington\, D.C. (former home of Frederick Douglass); the Wye House & Plantation (where Douglass was kept as a slave); the Edgar Allan Poe House in Baltimore; and many other local sites. \nShe received her BA in English and her MA in Literature from Salisbury University\, and worked on her PhD in American Literature at the George Washington University in Washington\, D.C. \nEarls volunteers for the Talbot Historical Society and the Talbot Humane Society. She lives in Easton with her husband\, Chris; her son\, Ryan\, her daughter\, Morgan; and her furry family of cats and dogs.
