SUMMARY:Maryland Day with the Dan Meyer Choir
DESCRIPTION:Maryland Day Celebration with The Dan Meyer Choir\nat the Talbot Historical Society Gardens\n*Weather Permitting* See below for Details\n\nThe Dan Meyer Choir is Baltimore’s most original community choir\, performing all original compositions and arrangements. They have performed for Artscape\, the Star-Spangled Spectacular and many other events. Most recently they sold out Baltimore’s Creative Alliance with an uproarious Presidents Day performance of The Love Songs of the Presidents: original settings of love poetry by former US Presidents. This summer the Dan Meyer Choir will be making history as the first choir to provide live music for a community water ballet performance when they take to the stage with Baltimore’s Fluid Movement. Choral music creates a unique bond between people and we hope that celebrating Maryland Day with music from all across the state will bring joy and friendship among fellow Marylanders on both sides of the Bay. The event will be held Saturday\, March 25th at 2pm outside in the Gardens at the Talbot Historical Society\, 25 S. Washington Street\, Easton\, Maryland. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN CHAIR AS SEATING IS NOT PROVIDED.\n\nIf bad weather is forecasted\, please check our Facebook page for an update on the event and where it will be held.\n\nSaturday March 25th\, 2023 at 2pm\nLocation: The Gardens at THS\n\nIf you have any questions\, contact the Talbot Historical Society at\n410-822-0773 or email kaylaw@talbothistory.org

SUMMARY:Collector's Day: Native American Artifacts
DESCRIPTION:Collector’s Day\nNative American Artifacts\n\nIt’s not every day that centuries old Native American artifacts are offered for public display but that’s exactly what is happening at the Talbot Historical Society\non March 25th from10am-4pm.\n\nTwo rooms of THS will be filled with amazing artifact collections together with their owners/finders. This event also gives participants the opportunity to learn about the objects that they have questions about with several experts including Terry Crannell. Mr. Crannell has been curator of Dorchester County Historical Society’s Native American department for 16 years\, past president of the Mid-Shore Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Maryland and founder of the Mid-Shore Archaeology Club. We encourage you to bring in your artifacts and the team will make every effort to identify\, date and offer their insight.\n\nSaturday March 25th\, 2023 from 10am to 4pm\nLocation: 25 S. SUMMARY:A Date With History: Bear Me Into Freedom with Jeff McGuiness
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n“A Date with History” Lecture Series Presents\n“Bear Me Into Freedom”\nwith Jeffrey C. McGuiness\n\nThe Talbot Historical Society’s “A Date with History” lecture series presents \n“Bear Me Into Freedom”\n\nFrederick Douglass was one of the most powerful and popular orators of the nineteenth century. An Old Testament prophet who was an enormously skilled speaker\, Douglass traveled constantly in the United States and Great Britain advocating for abolition\, emancipation\, and civil rights in packed halls.\nThe fire for his advocacy was his Talbot County experience on Maryland’s Eastern Shore where he was born and suffered there enslaved for eleven years.\nDouglass eloquently documented that experience in his three best-selling autobiographies that became the most powerful slave narrative in American literature. That narrative was the foundation of his heroic oratory.\nLance Morris and Jeff McGuiness bring Douglass’s Talbot years back to life with moving readings of Douglass’s Talbot narrative by Morris against stunning imagery by McGuiness of the places Douglass lived and struggled.\nThe presentation is based on McGuiness’s 284-page photographic essay\, Bear Me Into Freedom: The Talbot County of Frederick Douglass\, published by the St. Michaels Museum. \n\nFebruary 1st\, 2023 at 1 pm\nLocation: 25 S. Washington Street\, Easton\, Maryland\n\nReservations are required and the cost is\nFREE THS members and $5 for non-members.\nIf you have any questions or wish to sign-up please contact the\nTalbot Historical Society at\n410-822-0773 or email kaylaw@talbothistory.org

SUMMARY:A Date With History: Poplar Island Lecture
DESCRIPTION:A Date With History Speaker Series \n\n\n“A Date with History” Lecture Series Presents\nPoplar Island: An International Model of Innovative Reuse  \n\nLearn about Poplar Island’s unique story and continuing habitat successes at this talk given by Kristina Motley\, Senior Environmental Specialist from Maryland Environmental Service. Poplar Island is an environmental restoration project located in the Chesapeake Bay in Talbot County\, Maryland. The beneficial use project\, started in the 1990’s\, relies on dredged material collected from the approach channels to the Baltimore Harbor to restore lost remote island habitat within the Chesapeake Bay. The project partnership between Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration\, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, and Maryland Environmental Service has been in place for over 20 years and has seen the restoration of almost 400 acres of wetland habitat. Upland habitat and additional wetland habitat are planned and the island is slated to be completed in the 2040’s. Over 400 different species of wildlife have been documented and over 30 different birds have been confirmed as nesting onsite.\n\nThe Talbot Historical Society’s “A Date with History”\nlecture series about Poplar Island\nNovember 9th\, 2022 at 1 pm\nLocation: The Denton Extended Museum and Hill Research Center\nlocated at 25 S. SUMMARY:A Date With History: Joe Koper
DESCRIPTION:“A Date with History” Lecture Series Presents:\n“The Isaiah Fountain Case”\nby Joe Koper\n\nOur Date with History Speaker Series will feature Joseph Koper. Joe will be speaking about his new book\, “The Isaiah Fountain Case: Outrage and Jim Crow Justice on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.” He will focus on an account of a sensational rape case that convulsed Talbot County and made national headlines early in the 20th century. The story of Isaiah Fountain is told through court documents and hundreds of contemporaneous newspaper articles. The case documents dubious investigative and judicial actions and raises questions about Isaiah Fountain’s guilt and the Jim Crow legal system that convicted him.\n\nThe Talbot Historical Society’s “A Date with History”\nlecture series featuring Joe Koper\nOctober 28\, 2022 at 1 pm\nLocation: The Denton Extended Museum and Hill Research Center\nlocated at 25 S. SUMMARY:Mid-Shore Community Band Performance in the Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The Talbot Historical Society is pleased to announce an afternoon of music presented by the\nMid-Shore Community Band. The concert will take place on Saturday\, October 22\, 2022 at 2pm in the THS gardens at\n25 S. Washington Street in Easton\, Maryland. This is FREE and open to the public. Please bring your lawn chairs and enjoy this group of talented musicians. We’ll be taking donations at the door. Please call with any questions\, 410-822-0773 or email kaylaw@talbothistory.org.\n\nThe Mid-Shore Community Band carries on the tradition of community/town bands in the Middle Eastern Shore of Maryland. During the golden age of the town band (1880-1922)\, many communities were fortunate enough to have their own town bands. Easton had a band\, Cambridge had The Merry Concert Band and the Rescue Fire Company Band. Many larger companies had a band\, fire departments often had a band\, and organizations like the American Legion might also have a band. These bands were a major form of entertainment for the community.\nMid-Shore Community Band is an all-volunteer\, non-profit organization open to adults who play or have played band instruments as well as high school students who are approved by the Musical Director. Since their founding in 2009\, they have presented concerts in Talbot\, Dorchester\, and Caroline counties.\nThe band was formed in September\, 2009 by their Music Director Emeritus\, Matt Fullerton. Matt sensed that there were many musicians in the community that wanted to play their instruments\, but there was no local organization in which to participate. Fifty people responded to his call to form a band. They started rehearsing weekly on September 8\, 2009\, and performed an inaugural concert on Sunday\, October 25\, 2009 at the Elk’s Lodge in Easton. The band was originally called the Easton Community Band\, but in early December 2009 changed the name to Mid-Shore Community Band to reflect the area that they intended to serve.\nAt the end of 2015\, Matt Fullerton resigned as Music Director. John Banghart became Interim Music Director until EJ Oesterle\, took over as Music Director in June of 2016. EJ joined Mid-Shore Community Band as a percussionist\, and is the band director at\nEaston High School.\nIf you would like to join MSCB or explore the possibility of having Mid-Shore Community Band perform for your organization\, please contact them via e-mail at info@mscb.org.

SUMMARY:Hunter Harris Lecture - Back Again by Popular Demand!
DESCRIPTION:  \n“A Date with History” Lecture Series Presents:\nThe Bay From Above\, 75 Years of Change \nBack Again Due to Popular Demand! \nAerial Photographer Hunter H. Harris\, using a dual projection system\, will present a series of dramatic oblique aerial photographs showing changes in the local landscape over the past 75 years. These oblique aerial photographs chronicle\, in a very unique way\, the history of the area including the towns\, the rivers and their watersheds. “Many of the changes that I discovered while creating this series were not what I expected! These aerials really show us how we have changed our landscape forever from an unusual viewpoint”. \nThis lecture is presented in conjunction with “The Bay from Above” Exhibit at the Talbot Historical Society. The exhibit is on loan from the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and presents mid 1900s aerial photographs of the Chesapeake Bay by photographer H. Robins Hollyday and compares them with aerial photographic images of the exact same locations taken by our presenter\, Hunter Harris. \nHunter H. Harris is a 5th generation Eastern Shore native who has spent well over 12\,000 hours flying all kinds of aircraft all over the US. He is commercially licensed by the FAA to fly every “category” of aircraft that exist. This includes Airplanes: single and multiengine land or sea\, Helicopters\, Gliders (sailplanes) and Lighter-than-Air – Airships (blimps). \nHunter was born in Chestertown and raised in Kent County on Bloomingneck Farm along the Chesapeake Bay. Having the opportunity to grow up along the water helped fuel a genuine respect and appreciation for being near the Bay.   He now resides in Talbot County. \nThe Talbot Historical Society’s “A Date with History”\nlecture series featuring Hunter Harris\nSeptember 28\, 2022 at 1 pm \nLocation: The Denton Extended Museum and Hill Research Center\nlocated at 25 S.
