DESCRIPTION:A Date With History Lecture Series:\nIndigenous Cultures of Delmarva: A Journey Through Native American Heritage with Kateri Smith\nMonday\, Nov. 25\, 2024 @ 1 PM at the Talbot County Free Library (100 W. Dover St.\, Easton MD 21601)\nIndigenous Cultures of Delmarva: A Journey Through Native American Heritage. Join us for an illuminating exploration of the vibrant Indigenous cultures that have deeply impacted the Delmarva Peninsula. This lecture provides an in-depth look into the histories\, traditions\, and legacies of the Native American tribes that shaped the region. Discover how these communities flourished in Delmarva’s distinctive environment. Kateri Smith M.A. (Blackfoot/Métis/Anatolian Greek Descent) is currently attending Institute of American Indian Arts in the field of Museum Studies. Her focus is on rural and Native American history. Currently she is the collections and programming assistant at the Wheelwright Museum of The American Indian in Santa Fe\, NM. She was the co-curator of the show “Creations: Where We Begin” during fall 2023 at the Balzer Contemporary Art Gallery at IAIA. She is also a partner in Costas Art Advising LLC\, a collections management and art advising firm based in Santa Fe and Washington D.C.\nThis is presented by the Talbot Historical Society in partnership with the Talbot County Free Library and will take place at the library located at 100 W. These questions and many more will be answered through wonderfully enriching stories about Easton’s past.\nFirst tour: Starts at 11am\nThe tour guide will take you to various buildings within the historic district of downtown and explain the importance of the buildings in Easton’s history.\nSecond tour: Starts at 12pm (noon)\nThe tour guide\, Prof. Mike Olmert\, will take you to historic buildings on the Talbot Historical Society’s campus and downtown Easton while explaining the significance of the architecture of those historic buildings.\nALL TOURS MEET AT\n25 S. SUMMARY:A Date With History: Dr. Darrin Lowery Lecture
DESCRIPTION:A Date With History Lecture Series: Understanding Island Loss in the Chesapeake Bay with Dr. Darrin Lowery Lecture\nWednesday\, Nov. 13\, 2024 @ 1 PM at the Talbot County Free Library 100 W. Dover St.\, Easton MD 21601\nDarrin Lowery was raised on Tilghman Island and comes from a family of Maryland boat builders\, waterman\, and farmers. His family has lived on the Delmarva Peninsula since the 17th century. Locally\, one of Lowery’s ancestors was in Talbot County’s Militia Company for Bayside during the War of 1812 and his great grandfather was the last Civil War veteran to die in Talbot County. His interest in history\, archaeology\, and geology began at the age of seven\, while exploring the eroding shorelines of the Chesapeake Bay with his father.\nIn order to more completely understand the context of the early cultures living along the dynamic Chesapeake Bay\, he pursed and completed a Ph.D. in 2009 from the University of Delaware specializing in coastal geology and geoarchaeology. In 2013\, he was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian and serves as a research associate. Lowery has conducted extensive archaeological surveys and excavations in Maryland\, Delaware\, and Virginia over the past 35 years. While conducting this research\, he documented over 2\,000 archaeological sites spanning the entire region’s prehistory and history. He began writing about Chesapeake Bay archaeology and geology before entering college and has continued with over one hundred published monographs\, book chapters\, and articles. He currently works for a federal agency as a geologist and historic resource specialist.\nThis is presented by the Talbot Historical Society in partnership with the Talbot County Free Library and will take place at the library located at 100 W. Dover St.\, Easton\, MD 21601.\nThe program will begin at 1pm on Nov. 13th. Learn about a time on the Chesapeake Bay prior to a collective initiative for conservation with Talbot Historical Society’s reenactors Mike Mielke and Don Casson.
