SUMMARY:The Invention of Colonial Williamsburg Lecture
DESCRIPTION:“The Invention of Colonial Williamsburg.” \nColonial Williamsburg\, Virginia\, is the most studied 18th-Century town in the world.  This illustrated lecture will cover the founding and growth of this vast historical resource.  What drove the recovery of the town?  What changes have been made over the last 95 years? What sorts of insights can Williamsburg’s archaeology\, architecture\, material culture\, and history give us. This talk is about peering into the seeds of Time.  \nMichael Olmert wrote the Official Guide to Colonial Williamsburg (1985-2015) and has written some 50 articles for Colonial Williamsburg Magazine.  A professor in the University of Maryland’s English Department\, Olmert has long been interested in the connection between literature and history and architecture.  His books include Milton’s Teeth and Ovid’s Umbrella (Simon and Schuster\, 1996) and Kitchens\, Smokehouses\, and Privies (Cornell Univ. Press\, 2009).  His television writing has won him three primetime Emmys. \n

SUMMARY:Slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland:  The Legacies of Frederick Douglass\, Harriet Tubman\, Richard S. Potter\, and Moses Viney
DESCRIPTION:From newspaper accounts to personal narratives to essays\, we’ll analyze the everyday lives of slaves on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the 19th century.  We’ll retrace the journey of slaves such as Frederick Douglass\, whose life began on the Wye Plantation of Talbot County\, and ended on his own estate of Cedar Hill in Washington\, D.C.  To imagine what life would have been like for him\, we’ll take a virtual tour of both estates.  We’ll also discuss lesser known slaves of Caroline and Talbot Counties\, such as Richard S. Potter and Moses Viney.  Please join us for what promises to be a memorable discussion! \nThis event will be held August 4th at 1:00 PM with guest speaker Linda F. Earls\, Associate Professor of English\, Chesapeake College. It will be in the Extended Museum Gallery in the front of the Hill Research Center. Tickets are free for members and $5 for non-members. This event is by reservation only\, and will be limited to 40 seats\, so please email erinp@talbothistory.org or call 410-822-0773 to reserve your seat. \n  \nAbout the speaker\nLinda Earls began teaching at Chesapeake College in 1995 as an adjunct faculty instructor to the English department\, but was hired as a full-time professor in 1997 (teaching reading\, composition and literature courses\, particularly American and African American literature). \nShe frequently co-teaches American literature with American history professors\, as she believes the two courses go “hand in glove.” A lover of history\, she has an extensive collection of Civil War letters\, and since childhood has been fascinated visiting and reading anything pertaining to the war. \nA native of the Eastern Shore\, Earls shares her passion for making history “come alive” with her students by traveling with them to locations such as Cedar Hill in Washington\, D.C. (former home of Frederick Douglass); the Wye House & Plantation (where Douglass was kept as a slave); the Edgar Allan Poe House in Baltimore; and many other local sites. \nShe received her BA in English and her MA in Literature from Salisbury University\, and worked on her PhD in American Literature at the George Washington University in Washington\, D.C. \nEarls volunteers for the Talbot Historical Society and the Talbot Humane Society. She lives in Easton with her husband\, Chris; her son\, Ryan\, her daughter\, Morgan; and her furry family of cats and dogs.

DESCRIPTION:The Talbot Historical Society is pleased to announce a day of free guided tours of Historic Easton on Saturday\, November 14\, 2020 (Rain date November 15). \nVisitors and residents will enjoy this opportunity to explore the streets and buildings of Easton\, and will learn about the founding and growth of the town over the last 200 years. Easton was founded in 1710 as Talbot Courthouse\, and in 1788 became the official capital of the Eastern Shore\, and the town that we know today. Tour 1 will journey past many of the earliest Federal buildings where you will hear the stories of our transformation and growth as war\, fire\, and railroads impacted the town. This tour will be held at 10am\, noon and 2pm and will be led by Alison Irvin. Tour 2 will focus on the Ebenezer Methodist Episcopal Church\, Market House and Bullitt House and will discuss how architecture related to spiritual life\, civic life and daily life and will be led by Professor Michael Olmert. This tour will be held at 11am\, 1pm and 3pm. \nEach tour will be under an hour and will leave from the Talbot Historical Society Mary Jenkins House at 30 S. Washington Street. Groups will be limited to 10 people to accommodate social distancing and masks must be worn during tours. These tours will be on a first come\, first served basis\, so you may need to wait for the following time slot if a tour fills up.
