The Talbot Historical Society has a small staff that works to help the Society fulfill its mission. Due to our size, we rely on volunteers to support our staff to educate the public on a daily basis. If you are interested in helping to preserve the heritage of Talbot County, or if you just like meeting new people and working toward a common goal, then please consider volunteering with THS. The following opportunities are available, but you don’t need to stick to just one category, most of our volunteers work on many different projects while they are here!
Docents/Tour Guides
Enthrall visitors with tales of Talbot County’s history. Become a Historical Society docent!
We are looking for active and enthusiastic volunteers to lead historic house tours and walking tours of Historic Easton. Help the Historical Society achieve its mission of discovering and preserving the cultural heritage of our community. Joining the docent corps provides a rich opportunity to learn about Talbot County history and to make a real contribution to its preservation and interpretation. No previous teaching experience required. Great flexibility and variety are hallmarks of volunteering at the Historical Society.
Archives and Object Collections
If you are a detail-oriented person, then this is the position for you! Help us sort, catalog, and store some of Talbot County’s most important and unique documents, manuscripts, photographs, maps and objects.
Buildings & Grounds
Are you a handy person who has already fixed everything around your house twice? If you are looking for something to do, we could use your expertise. The Society owns and manages seven buildings, a garden, and numerous other areas in need of maintenance and upkeep, so there are always projects on hand. The Talbot County Garden Club takes care of the garden, but we sometimes need help with the buildings, including upkeep and small repair and maintenance projects.
Education and Programs
From lectures to youth programs, school activities to adult workshops, the Education Program is in need of dedicated people to organize and staff educational outreach and events. No teaching experience is necessary. We need volunteers who will roll up their sleeves and pitch in on various tasks on a project-by-project basis.
Photograph Collection Project
The Society has a photograph collection of 100,000 original negatives and prints, recognized across the state as the most important collection of historical photographs of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. For more than 15 years, the collection has been a victim of neglect due to a lack of staff, money and time. Now, though, the Society is dedicated to preserving, re-housing, and cataloging this important collection! Conservation and cataloging training will be provided; no experience with photography is needed, only the interest and the desire to help make this collection safe and accessible!
Photo Identification
If you are unable to commit to a more formal volunteer position, or do not currently live in Talbot County, consider helping us identify photos in our “Project Rewind” album on Facebook. Due to the passage of time and a lack of documentation, often information on photos is lost or confused, and we rely on help from contributors to understand their historical background. Just leave us a comment below a picture if you have any information! We post new photos to our page every week, so check back to see what we’ve posted.
Research Assistance
Do you love solving a good mystery, or enjoy learning more about history? We are always looking for volunteers to join our team of research assistants. These volunteers help answer emails from people looking for historical information, and assist those coming in person with research questions. They also help dig up information on mystery items in our collections, and write captions for our exhibits.
