A Date With History Lecture Series: Understanding Island Loss in the Chesapeake Bay with Dr. Darrin Lowery Lecture
Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024 @ 1 PM at the Talbot County Free Library 100 W. Dover St., Easton MD 21601
Darrin Lowery was raised on Tilghman Island and comes from a family of Maryland boat builders, waterman, and farmers. His family has lived on the Delmarva Peninsula since the 17th century. Locally, one of Lowery’s ancestors was in Talbot County’s Militia Company for Bayside during the War of 1812 and his great grandfather was the last Civil War veteran to die in Talbot County. His interest in history, archaeology, and geology began at the age of seven, while exploring the eroding shorelines of the Chesapeake Bay with his father.
In order to more completely understand the context of the early cultures living along the dynamic Chesapeake Bay, he pursed and completed a Ph.D. in 2009 from the University of Delaware specializing in coastal geology and geoarchaeology. In 2013, he was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian and serves as a research associate. Lowery has conducted extensive archaeological surveys and excavations in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia over the past 35 years. While conducting this research, he documented over 2,000 archaeological sites spanning the entire region’s prehistory and history. He began writing about Chesapeake Bay archaeology and geology before entering college and has continued with over one hundred published monographs, book chapters, and articles. He currently works for a federal agency as a geologist and historic resource specialist.
This is presented by the Talbot Historical Society in partnership with the Talbot County Free Library and will take place at the library located at 100 W. Dover St., Easton, MD 21601.
The program will begin at 1pm on Nov. 13th. The lecture is free to the public, but reservations are required.
