Discover an inspiring story of perseverance and impact in this compelling exhibit that celebrates the African American experience in Talbot County. Spanning more than three centuries, the exhibit highlights how thousands of African American families shaped local culture, places, and pivotal moments through vision, commitment, and resilience. Visitors will explore how, even in the face of enslavement, legal segregation, and systemic racism, African American neighborhoods, businesses, and institutions not only emerged but thrived in Talbot County and across the Delmarva region. Through these lived experiences, the exhibit reveals the enduring power of innovation, strong community bonds, and the passion that helped build the nation.
The Voices of the African American Experience exhibit thoughtfully explores the rich and enduring history of African Americans in Talbot County across generations. The stories shared here are the result of countless hours of careful research and meaningful collaboration with the community. We are deeply grateful to the late Dr. Willie Woods, a former board member, whose dedication, insight, and unwavering commitment were instrumental in bringing this remarkable exhibit to life as part of the Talbot Historical Society’s permanent collection.
